One key project on MAFT’s plan, which is top of the agenda for autistic children and their families, is to create social clubs for autistic children in Maynooth.
The purpose of the social club is to connect autistic children and their families, who are often socially isolated to:
•Share special interests and experiences;
•Advocate for their needs to be acknowledged and supported.
• Begin to see that a safe, secure space to relax and have fun is completely possible, and adjustments to create these spaces should never be too much to expect or ask for.
•Harness strengths, abilities, and interests to help improve autistic people’s self-esteem, confidence, social engagement, relationships, and life skills.
Our autism social club for children and teens offers a nurturing space where attendees can comfortably interact and cultivate vital social abilities. Fundraising for equipment and insurance ensures that this programme can be inclusive and accessible to all.
In 2024 Maynooth Autism Friendly Town would like to start facilitating an Adult Social Club. Many of us take for granted the social life we have with friends when we become adults and having the freedom to travel and go out every evening after work or college is easy. The challenges that autistic adults face in navigating social life can be significantly different due to sensory sensitivities and a range of other factors. Discovering a welcoming and adaptable environment for gathering with friends can have a profound impact within the Autism Community.
We aim to establish a space where autistic adults in our community can experience empowerment. Our goal is to offer a secure environment that acknowledges attendees’ needs and fosters the development of an advocacy group.
Fundraising for games and other activities ensures that these social nights are enjoyable and meaningful. This contributes to the overall quality of life for autistic adults in Maynooth.
